Impacts of Acculturation & Acculturative Stress on Depression among International Marriage Migrant Women
Kim Hyun-Sil

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of international marriage migrant women living in Daegu and Kyungpook area, and to identify the impacts of acculturative stress and pattern of acculturation on their depression in this population. Methods: Research objectives were accomplished by conducting an anonymous questionnaire survey with 173 international marriage migrant women. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Women who received higher monthly income and perceived higher level of recognition about their mother country and their culture by Korean reported less depression compared to women receiving low monthly income and perceiving lower level of recognition about their mother country and their culture by Korean. Women who perceived lower level of recognition about their mother country and their culture by Korean reported also higher level of acculturative stress than women perceiving higher level of recognition about their mother country and their culture by Korean. The patterns of acculturation among international marriage migrant women living in Daegu and Kyungpook area appeared separation, marginalization, assimilation, and integration in that order. Assimilation and integration among the patterns of acculturation were negatively correlated with the acculturative stress, but separation and marginalization were positively correlated with the acculturative stress. On the other hand, the level of depression was positively correlated with the level of acculturative stress; those who reported greater acculturative stress tended to report higher levels of depression. The significant predictors of depression were acculturative stress and acculturation showing 44.6% of the variance in depression. Conclusion: Based on the research finding, the author suggests the necessity of developing social service program based on the women"s level of acculturative stress and the patterns of acculturation.
